Our History

1950-1990's

Originally established in 1950 and later in its present form in 1952 Roberts Bros. was established by Mr Hugh Owen Roberts, in the small village of Pentre Broughton, on the out-skirts of Wrexham. Having been born in the village, where the family successfully owned the local grocery shop and Post Office, his talents lay elsewhere - he was a craftsman and among the many skills obtained by his apprenticeship as a carpenter/joiner was the ability to construct coffins and caskets.

Over the course of some years this led into Hugh Owen and Roberts Bros. gaining a reputation as the village undertakers, during this time he was joined by his son Stuart and together their service to the village and surrounding communities continued to grow. The company at this time was based in the workshops situated at the rear of the family’s village Post Office but over time and as the company grew larger, new more modern premises were required and the decision was taken to relocate to the company’s present base adjoining the family home on the brow of High Street in Pentre Broughton.

Throughout the late 1980’s and early 90’s the facilities on High Street grew and became the permanent base from which the company would still continue to operate.

1994-2010

In 1994 we took on the services of Hughes & Jones Bros, of Coedpoeth due to the retirement of the directors, Glyn and Idris Jones, ensuring that their wish for this to also remain a family run business continues.

Sadly, Hugh Owen passed away in February 1997 leaving son Stuart and his grandson’s Richard and Philip to continue the traditions which he’d established.

2005 saw us take on the services of another local family business, T.A Rogers & Sons, of Brymbo, following the passing away of Mrs Gwyneth Rogers.

2006 was a momentous year for the company for multiple reasons as in May we received the first brand-new custom-built fleet of vehicles in the company’s history – our Ford Cardinal Hearse and matching Dorchester Limousines

In November the same year though Stuart sadly passed away following the lasting results of being taken seriously ill in October 2003 leaving the family business entrusted to his wife Susan, Richard and Philip, and his daughter in law Susan.

Over the years the premises have seen many changes and updates, from the original garages, workshop and Chapel of Rest to the new modern, stylish and welcoming building of today designed to cope with all aspects of funeral services and a wide variety of family requests.

2011-Today

2011 saw the biggest of these developments when the building grew significantly as two additional stories were added and our amazing team continue to grow even further with the expansion and installation of several new departments.

In April 2012 tragedy hit the family once again as Susan, Stuart’s wife and the boys’ mother also passed away following a sudden and short illness.

In 2015 the company purchased the former White Hart Inn public house opposite our office following its closure and began plans to open a purpose-built fleet hub, this was opened in 2017.

April 2018 saw the arrival of the companies second new fleet, our superb Jaguar XJ hearse and limousines.

In 2019 we were joined by Stephen Roberts, Richard and Susan’s eldest son, a fourth generation of the Roberts family. Having gained his diploma in funeral arrangement and administration together with his diploma in funeral directing, Stephen continues to provide the high standards of the company.

2021 saw an another extremely proud day as Richard was joined by all three sons, Stephen, Andrew and Christopher, at their first funeral ceremony together during the unforeseen events of the Covid pandemic.

Over the years through not only the dedication of the Roberts family but also the many dedicated and skilled members of their team, both past and present, the company has gained a reputation as Wrexham’s leading funeral directors by providing reliability, quality and personal service to its clients during a difficult time of sorrow and sadness.

Our aim is simple...

To continue the long-established family traditions of personal service and care to families in their time of need.
